His Excellency Abu Bakarr Karim, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, has participated in the 5th International Symposium on Offshore Aquaculture. The high-profile event, organized by the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, convened industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the globe to discuss advancements in offshore aquaculture systems.
Since its inception in 2017, the Symposium has established itself as a vital platform for fostering knowledge exchange, exploring innovative solutions, and strategizing for sustainable marine aquaculture development. Past editions of the event have drawn over 500 participants from more than 15 countries, including China, Australia, Chile, the United States, Finland, Germany, and Norway.

• Environmental Challenges and Opportunities in Offshore Aquaculture
The discussions aim to tackle critical issues such as food security and sustainable livelihoods, highlighting the role of offshore aquaculture in achieving these global objectives.
Sierra Leone has a growing history of collaboration with China in fisheries and aquaculture. In 2023, the Jiangsu Fishery Resource Management and Aquaculture Technology Training Class was hosted by Jiangsu Ocean University. This 21-day program, attended by 25 participants from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, focused on developing strategies to enhance Sierra Leone’s fisheries sector. Participants engaged in research, inspections, and knowledge-sharing sessions across Beijing, Jiangsu, and other locations.
The training underscored the commitment to fostering bilateral trade and investment cooperation between Sierra Leone and Jiangsu Province. It also sought to share opportunities for the growth and modernization of Sierra Leone’s fishing industry.
