BEIJING — In a significant stride for international conservation, the Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Beijing and the Beijing Wild Animal Park have signed a landmark cooperation agreement. The pact promises to enhance bilateral collaboration in wildlife protection, scientific research, and public education.
The signing ceremony, held at the park’s headquarters, builds upon over fifty years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscoring a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural exchange.
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Abu Bakarr Karim, underscored the agreement’s broader significance. “This partnership is a timely opportunity to strengthen our longstanding bilateral ties,” he stated. Ambassador Karim highlighted the planned exchange of animals as a powerful form of cultural diplomacy that will bring the peoples of both countries closer. He urged for a concrete action plan to ensure the agreement’s objectives are effectively met.
Yu ShaoBin, Director of the Beijing Wild Animal Park, echoed this forward-looking vision. “The signing is just the beginning. We are committed to turning these plans into tangible results swiftly,” he said. Director Yu announced that a specialized team will soon travel to Sierra Leone to initiate cooperative projects on the ground. A dedicated fund has been established to support this work, with the animal exchange program serving as a cornerstone for deeper, sustained collaboration.
Established in 2001, the Beijing Wild Animal Park is a premier Chinese conservation institution, housing more than 6,000 animals. This partnership with Sierra Leone opens new avenues for advancing wildlife preservation techniques and fostering mutual understanding.
